Soil Amendment: Lime for pH adjustment, Mushroom Compost and Organic Fertilizer

Mulch: Dark Brown Bark, Medium Size

Weed Protection: Landscape Barrier/Weed Blocker

Border: Brown Semi-rigid Rubber (right side only - curved), almost flush with mulch

Irrigation: To be addressed later

Blooms: Late Summer into Fall

(1) Emperor I® Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum 'Wolff'

Deciduous

Blooms: Inconspicuous; prized for foliage.

Foliage: Dark Red in Spring and Summer to Scarlet in Fall

Sunlight: Partial to Full Sun

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.

Mature Height: 15'   Mature Spread: 15'



(2) Big Ears Lamb's Ear - Stachys byzantina 'Big Ears'
Scattered/Intermingled

Herbaceous Semi-Evergreen; Evergreen in this Area Depending on Winter Temperatures

Blooms: Stemmed, Pink to Purple, but may not occur.

Sunlight: Partial to Full Sun

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.

Mature Height: 6 to 12"   Mature Spread: 12 to 24"


(1) June Plantain Lily - Hosta x 'June'

Blooms: Pale Lavender on Stalks

Sunlight: Partial Sun to Shade

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.

Mature Height: 1 to 2'   Mature Spread: 3'  



(1) Blue Wheat Grass
Elymus magellanicus
One of the Forward Corners of Bed

Herbaceous Evergreen

Blooms: Bluish-green flower spikes mature to tan as the seed ripens; reminiscent of the heads of wheat. Foliage retains blue color in warm winter areas.

Sunlight: Full Sun

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.

Mature Height: 12 to 24"   Mature Spread: 20 to 30" 

Note: Will look great elsewhere as well in pots with some sweet potato vine spillers. 



(4) Lilyturf - Liriope muscari
Scattered/Intermingled

Evergreen

Blooms: Lavender on Stalks

Sunlight: Partial Sun to Partial Shade

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Water weekly or more often in extreme heat.

Mature Height: 10 to 16"   Mature Spread: 12 to 18"


(1) Cast Iron Plant - Aspidistra elatior (your plant asset)
Where Appropriate

Perennial Evergreen

Blooms: Inconspicuous

Sunlight: Full Shade to Partial Sun

Water/Soil: Moist soil surface, not soggy.

Mature Height: 2 to 3'   Mature Spread: 2 to 3'

Note: This photo lends itself to some other ideas of how to place this elsewhere on your property.


(1) Kapit Elephant Ear - Alocasia infernalis 'Kapit'
Optional, in Place of Another Plant as it is questionable in our hardiness zone, but I believe will work and be a beautiful addition

Perennial, Semi-Evergreen

Blooms: Inconspicuous

Sunlight: Partial Sun

Water/Soil: Moist soil surface, not soggy.

Mature Height: 12 to 18"   Mature Spread: 12 to 18"

(2-3) Sago Palm - Cycas revoluta
In-line, Equidistant from One Another

Evergreen (in mild climates)

Sunlight: Full Sun

Water/Soil: Moist, not soggy/well-drained. Less water needed once established.

Very slowly reaches 10 ft. tall, 8 ft, wide, with 3 to 6 ft. long fronds. It will be many, many years before this occurs.
