Wow! She Nailed It!

Wonderful Tree Border Bed
This cool couple contacted me a couple months ago to come look at their rear lawn and some other concerns. Oh, they also share names with probably the most famous doll couple ever.

The lawn was sparse in some areas, but this is a very shaded area. The largest problem was some St. Augustine she had tried around this tree, and it failed.

We discussed another try at St. Augustine, but it has had some problems over the last several years in may locations in the Midlands. I took soil samples to be tested. They both still enjoy doing much of the work on the property, themselves. I mentioned seeding and over-seeding the other areas, amending and then aerating.

Then I said, "Why don't you plant a variety of shade-loving plants and don't have a plan as far as placement." This wouldn't have been possible anyway because of the trees root flare, but I thought it would look better somewhat haphazard.

I was stopping by briefly to drop off some materials to later remove some dead indian hawthorns, redo the bed outline and then plant some loropetalums (more later). Well, the "B" variety of the doll couple was there and asked if I had seen what she had done around the tree. I hadn't because I was in a hurry and hadn't picked my head up - silly me.

I looked up and over toward the tree and said, "Wow! You nailed it!" (You may want to enlarge the image to truly enjoy it.) It works so well, particularly with the surrounding landscape. She used a variety of varieties of hostas, ferns and lenten roses. And, that killer metallic flower, which was already killer, sets this off, or vice versa - doesn't matter.

I hope to return to care for and prune a lady banks rose which is no lady right now. She's a beast. We just need to find a trellis worthy of her.
