If you took the title of this post, "Knowing, Loving, Serving" and applied it to your life, the way you feel of yourself or some of those around you; even if you do not feel you are religious or a Christian, it's still one wonderful sense of spirit and life, a perspective that is not always feasible or probable, but always, always possible.
For the United Methodist, the phrase is Knowing, Loving, Serving… So the World Will Experience Christ's Love.
Feel entirely and completely free to install "Your Love" instead of, or along with "Christ's Love". Wherever your devotion lies, the message is still beautiful and so powerful.
If you have left your Christian community for reasons many have, want to re-invigorate your Christian faith, wish to find a church which will accept you on any terms or simply wish to appreciate and follow the teachings and experiences of Jesus, realizing our lives are about so much - the good, the bad, the mistakes, the achievements, love, trauma and how we all can gracefully accomplish most anything, in peace; please consider coming to visit with us at Bethel United Methodist Church.
Personal Notes:
I haven't been a regular church-goer since I was raised an Episcopalian at Trinity as I child. I have lived in several locations and traveled a lot, yet I did find some wonderful churches through friends.
I never find a given church to be part of my faith or that attending church even defines my faith. Through all I was given by my parents, in light of my shortcomings and faults over the years, I never lost my sense of spirit, faith and hope, religious or not.
However; it was nice to begin to regularly attend Bethel United Methodist Church, for which my mother attends. I didn't attend for or with her because of her and she would have called total B.S. on me had I claimed such. She knows me. It's for me.
One of my favorite churches was a multi-denominational (which, actually means non-denominational) church while I was in the U.S. Navy and a small community church I attended at an elementary school in Charlotte.
To me, facades and certain ministers don't always make the church, as long as one receives what they come for - the message, but at Bethel United Methodist, we have Minister Julie Belman.
Before you delve into her bio, I must say:
She brings spirit, a presence, a sense of life to our church...inspiring, welcoming, warm, understanding.
She relates so well to the message of scripture, from stories of her own to those combined with hers and those of authors and mentors, and life experiences.
She has a wonderful and light sense of humor and we are going to keep her as long as we can.
Bio:
Rev. Julie Songer Belman delights in her new appointment to Bethel UMC in Columbia! For the past four years Julie has pastored at First UMC Winnsboro. She previously served as Minister of Evangelism and Outreach at Shandon UMC in Columbia.
While Julie relishes the opportunity that leading a congregation like Bethel presents – setting a vision, preaching and teaching God’s Word, cultivating the mission of the church – her deepest passion is walking with people as they discover the depth of God’s love for them in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Julie grew up in Irmo, South Carolina and is an honor graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill. After college she moved to New York City to pursue a career on Broadway. Following three years of leadership in her Manhattan church, Julie felt the call to ordained ministry. She graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from The Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta and is an Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church.
Julie is certified in “Women and Theology” and traveled with the World Methodist Evangelism Institute to Chile and Paraguay, South America. Julie is passionate about connecting the Gospel story to the everyday lives of extraordinary disciples. She feels most joyful when serving others and sharing God’s love with all. Julie is excited to see what God has in store for Bethel Church and the Forest Acres community!
Julie enjoys performing in community theatre and spending time with her family. Her husband Travis is an avid tennis player and an executive with AT&T. They have been blessed with three children: a son, James (3) and boy/girl twins, Ray & Marlow (1)
