Here she is, Amaryllis (Hippeastrum 'Fantasica' - for this cultivar). Their bulbs were brought to the U.S. from South America, via Europe, in the 1700s. Some have bloomed again and again for over 75 years - definitely a candidate for an heirloom plant.
This one is placed on a piece of furniture near a corner and she is reaching about three feet tall.
Not bad considering she was purchased potted in late November with nary a shoot showing from the top of the bulb. Nothing against Lowes as I shop there often, but rarely for plants. Well, Lowes did good on this one.
And, yes, she needed and still needs support. The shoots became stems/stalks and she took off. She really got busy less than a week ago as a bud became a bloom almost daily. There are four open flowers right now with a fifth bloom breaking out.
